Round 2 Schedule
Posted by Noah on July 25, 2005
Here's a long, tedious explanation of how round 2 works, and why we're doing it this way, for anyone who's interested.
First of all, in order to understand how and why round 2 works, you need to understand round 3, which is the playoffs. Round 3 will take place over three weeks (Aug 17, 24, and 31). Teams will be divided into three tiers: two tiers of eight teams each (tiers 1 and 2), and a tier of four teams (tier 3). Tiers 1 and 2 will each play quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals in order to determine places 1 through 8 (tier 1) and 9 through 16 (tier 2). Tier 3 will play a round-robin to determine places 17 through 20.
So that leaves us with three weeks for round 2, and with the following goals:
- make sure that teams end up in the right tier for round 3; although we'd like to have everyone accurately ranked going into round 3, it's most important that they be in the right tier; so, for example, it's not too big a deal if teams #9 and #10 are ranked incorrectly re: each other, but it is a big deal if teams #8 and #9 are ranked incorrectly, since they'll end up in the wrong tiers for round 3
- have teams play games that are competitive and meaningful
- make sure that every team has (or had) a chance to finish in first place overall, regardless of where they were ranked to start the season; the ranking at the beginning of the season was pretty random, and pretty wrong, according to the results of round 1; we wanted to make sure that a team ranked #20 at the start of the season could theoretically make it in to tier 1 and win round 3
To begin round 2, teams will be divided into five tiers of four teams each, based on their records in round 1. So these tiers look like this:
Tier 1
----------
1. Los Tigres
2. Immortal Excrement
3. Def Leppard Fan Club
4. red devils
Tier 2
----------
5. OH-SNAP!!!!
6. Queens PHE
7. FlamingHoes
8. Channel 11
Tier 3
----------
9. Molotov Cocktail
10. Gold
11. Serene Green
12. Charcool
Tier 4
----------
13. Keysters
14. Score-o-matics
15. The Mother Huckers
16. Tenacious 'bees
Tier 5
----------
17. RYATT aka Purple Nurples
18. TRANSFORMERS
19. Green Meanies
20. Albino Seals
Tier 1 will play a round-robin for ranking going in to round 3. All games will be on field 5, but the games may be early (5:30) or late (6:55) so please check the schedule ahead of time (all games are scheduled already). Because they're playing a round-robin, standings actually matter for tier 1, so tier 1 standings appear on the website. Standings aren't relevant for anyone else.
Each of the other tiers (2 through 5) play playdowns within that tier for the first two weeks of round 2. The first week, the top-ranked team in the tier plays the last ranked team in that tier, and the second-ranked team plays the third-ranked team. The second week, the winners and losers from the first week play off (within the same tier). This will result in a new ranking for each of these four tiers after two weeks. This is particularly important for tier 3, which includes teams that have never played each other, because they were in different tiers during round 1.
After the new ranking has been created, everyone in tiers 2 through 5 will play a crossover game for ranking going in to round 3. So:
- the top-ranked team in teir 2 will play the last-ranked team in tier 3
- the second-ranked team in tier 2 will play the third-ranked team in tier 3
- the third-ranked team in tier 2 will play the second-ranked team in tier 3
- the last-ranked team in tier 2 will play the top-ranked team in tier 3
The exact same thing will happen between tiers 4 and 5. In each case, the winner of the game will take over the ranking of the higher-ranked team going in, and the loser will take the ranking of the lower-ranked team going in. So, for example, if the second-ranked team in tier 3 (ranked #10 overall) beats the third-ranked team in tier 2 (ranked #7 overall), the two teams exchange their overall rankings going into round 3.
All round 2 games for teams in tiers 2 and 3 will be at 6:55, but the field and opponent will depend on the results of the previous week, so they can not be scheduled in advance. All round 2 games for teams in tiers 4 and 5 will be at 5:30, but again the field and opponent will depend on the results of the previous week, so they can not be scheduled in advance.

Pictures
Posted by Noah on July 8, 2005
I finally got around to adding pictures to the site. They're all from last year, though.
If you have any good pictures, we're always looking for new ones (send them to noah@kingstonultimate.ca). If you want to send some pics at this point, since we've already got a few, I'd prefer if you'd pick out the best two or three that you have and just send those. I can't guarantee that we'll use all the pictures we get, but we'll do what we can.
If we have enough good pictures, we'll probably look at putting up a photo gallery at some point.
